This week’s theme in my yoga practices was peace: making peace with what is alive within you. Yoga offers us a beautiful lens to observe ourselves, where we listen to the body, attune to the breath, and notice the thoughts and voices that arise within. As we practice, we learn to sit with whatever surfaces, meeting ourselves with presence and compassion.
The real challenge ánd the magic comes in staying in the role of the observer. It’s natural to want to push certain feelings away, neglect uncomfortable thoughts, or try to solve or even fight them. Yet the invitation in yoga, and in life, is to notice: can you make peace with it? Can you look at what arises, acknowledging its presence, without feeling the need to run from it or rush toward it?
This practice of making peace with ourselves is ongoing and gentle, a journey of accepting what makes you uniquely you. When we learn to treat ourselves with kindness through any inner storm, we begin to look at the storms of others with soft eyes as well, cultivating peace in the world around us.
Just as we’re instructed on an airplane to secure our own oxygen mask before assisting others, we can only share peace when we’ve first nurtured it within ourselves. Taking time to cultivate calm and acceptance inwardly creates a steady foundation to meet life’s challenges. In tending to our own peace, we create a ripple effect that extends naturally to those around us.
Begin with peace in yourself, nurturing it, and then watch as that calmness flows outward, bringing gentleness and compassion into your connections with the world.
Tips for making peace within
Meditate
Meditation is a powerful tool to turn your gaze inward and explore what is alive within you. As you meditate, notice any sensations that arise. Does the sensation feel sharp or dull? Does it have a color? Where in your body do you feel it most? How long has it been there? By asking yourself these questions, you connect more deeply with the sensation, observing it without judgment, resistance, or the urge to escape. This gentle inquiry encourages acceptance of what is present. If you prefer guidance, consider trying this free meditation to support you in this exploration.
Practice Breath Exercises
Focusing on your outbreath is a simple yet powerful way to calm the nervous system. Try lengthening each outbreath slightly longer than the inbreath. This practice activates the parasympathetic nervous system. This helps body and mind to shift from a state of stress to one of rest and relaxation. A mindful breathing technique can be especially helpful in moments of tension. Because it brings a sense of peace and grounding with each breath.
Embrace Nature
Spending time in nature can be a transformative way to cultivate peace within. Nature has a calming effect on the mind and body, allowing us to reconnect with the present moment. Take a walk in a park, stroll through the forest or dunes, or simply observe the trees and sky. As you immerse yourself in the natural world, focus on your senses. Notice the sounds around you, the feel of the breeze on your skin, and the colours and textures of your surroundings. This mindful engagement with nature encourages a sense of grounding and tranquility, helping you release any tension and making peace within.
