We hold the key to our own happiness. In The Four Agreements, author Don Miguel Ruiz explores how self-limiting beliefs steal our joy and lead to unnecessary suffering. Drawing from ancient Toltec wisdom, he presents a powerful code of conduct to transform our lives.
By applying these four insights, you will find that you alone are responsible for creating your own happiness and wellbeing:
1. Be impeccable with your words
This agreement encourages you to speak with integrity and say only what you truly mean.
How to practice?
- Stop negative self-talk: replace criticism with encouragement
- Use language that supports and inspires others
- Be reliable in your words and promises, honour your commitments
- Be honest, but choose words that are compassionate and considerate
2. Don’t take anything personally
Nothing others do is because of you. Their actions are based on their own perception of reality. The more immune we are to the actions and opinions of others, the less we suffer from it.
How to practice?
- Notice that everyone speaks from their own perspective and experiences
- Don’t overthink every word being said but stay calm and practice patience
- Use feedback to grow instead of feeling attacked by it
- Forgive people and move on, don’t hold grudges
3. Don’t make assumptions
Not sure about something? Need something? Ask. Clear and transparent communication prevents misunderstandings, sadness, and unnecessary drama.
How to practice?
- Ask questions and get the facts before you jump to conclusions
- Assumptions are the mother of all F-ups, so keep an open mind or check your assumptions
- Look for the real story and facts to avoid spreading rumours
- Communicate clearly what you wish for or need instead of waiting for others to ask
4. Always do your best
Our personal understanding of ‘doing your best’ changes from day to day. Check in with yourself regularly, and learn to accept and love yourself to redefine ‘best’ as it applies each day.
How to practice?
- Notice your progress and celebrate small steps instead of fixating on perfection
- Be consistent in what you do and commit yourself to your progress
- Check in with your energy levels daily and act accordingly
- Encourage yourself to rest or take action, and try to avoid being your own inner critic
When you start using the four agreements, you will grow in self-awareness, and a experience deeper sense of freedom. With these principles, you empower yourself to live with greater authenticity and joy. You are the key to your own happiness. So remember, each day you have the opportunity to choose peace, kindness, and a commitment to your wellbeing.
